Most people are surprised to learn that sleeping less than six or seven hours a night can increase their mortality risk more than smoking, high blood pressure or heart disease.

Losing as little as one and a half hours of sleep for just one night could result in a reduction of daytime alertness by as much as 32 percent. This loss can impair memory and the ability to think and process information effectively.

Decreased alertness can also affect your life by limiting your participation in activities that require sustained attention, such as reading a book or watching your favorite TV show. And the risk of receiving an occupational injury more than doubles when a person is sleepy.

Car accidents are another problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates conservatively that each year drowsy driving is responsible for at least 100,000 automobiles crashed, 71,000 injuries and 1,550 fatalities.

As many as 70 million Americans have sleep disturbances-which include taking a long time to get to sleep, sleeping less and waking up frequently.

Sleep disturbances may in fact be a symptom of a much larger problem, especially if they are associated with irritability and mood swings. Emotional stress, racing thoughts and restlessness can be signs of something more serious, such as bipolar disorder.

"If someone is experiencing restlessness and irritability, along with sadness or emotional ups and downs for more than two weeks," said Dr. Ellen Frank, professor of psychiatry and psychology, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, "they should seek medical attention from a specialist who is trained to diagnose or perhaps just rule out depression or bipolar disorder."

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has launched a new Web site, www. sleeplessinamerica.org, which offers educational resources that provide screening for sleeplessness, information on when to see a doctor and a questionnaire to determine when sleeplessness might be symptomatic of a more serious illness. The Web site is also available in Spanish.

I have spoken to my household and particularly my parents about this matter. They have advised me to seek help from a doctor. I must say that even though this would be good advice for most people, I feel that I am the kind of person who could become easily hooked and dependent on any tablets that would be described. I certainly do not want an addiction to add to my problems.

Potential solution to my depression

A few weeks ago I was watching a TV program which has since had a huge touch on my life. It was an army type program and it talked about how one particular group of soldiers had all seemingly become ill and could not even complete the most routine of tasks.

A doctor or some other case of medical person was called to their camp to investigate what was wrong. The first opinion was that it was likely to be some kind of food toxic condition.

The doctor actually told that the men had salt neediness and called for a large number of salt tablets to be purchased to the camp.

I considered this and wondered if this could be the reason of my own issues.

The next time I experienced I was becoming down or when I was over tired, I ate food products which contained a lot of salt and I am very happy to report that I quickly regained my energy and confidence levels. Such an easy solution to what was once such a huge problem for me.

The committee members want parental depression care to be available in several different settings -- not just at mental health clinics or in specialists' offices.
"We feel very strongly that we want to mainstream depression treatment," England says.
The new report also recommends making policy changes and prioritizing research on parental depression.

If Parents are Depressed, Then, Kids Need Help

A new report from NRC the National Research Council & the Institute of Medicine calls for health and social service professionals to pay higher attention to the impact of parental depression on their kids.
Rather than treating only the depressed adult, health-care and mental-health professionals should evaluate the fallout of the depression on the entire family, particularly children, and design treatment programs with everyone in mind, according to the report that was to be released Wednesday.
While depressed parents don't necessarily harm their children -- deliberately or inadvertently -- studies have shown parental depression can increase the chances of children having health, emotional and behavioral problems.
Only one-third of adult sufferers seek treatment for their depression, which means their children probably won't get treatment either.
Removing barriers to coordinating care across agencies and service providers, asking patients with depression if they have children and if their depression affects family members and requiring health plans to cover a greater range of mental-health services would help put the focus on the family, according to the report.
To help protect children from the negative impact of parental depression, the report suggested that Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extend Medicaid services for new mothers to two years after birth, a critical period of development.
CMS could reimburse primary-care providers for mental-health services and cover preventive services for children at risk of developing problems, rather than cover treatment only after problems occur.
The study was sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, California Endowment, U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

This title is referring to a study which examined the relation between child depression and conduct disorder as a function of peer social status (i.e., popular, rejected, neglected, controversial, average) in a sample of 1,464 no referred 4th graders.

Both child depression and conduct disorder were measured by self-report, peer nomination, and teacher ratings. Social status was assessed by peer nomination. A strong correlation (.73) was found between depression and conduct disorder, even after accounting for shared method variance by confirmatory factor analysis. Furthermore, the number of Ss who scored high on both depression and conduct disorder was greater than would be expected by chance alone. Multivariate tests revealed that rejected Ss scored higher than average Ss on measures of depression and conduct disorder. Controversial boys also scored higher on measures of conduct disorder. However, analyses also revealed that the association between depression and rejected social status might be due to a subgroup of depressed children who also manifested symptoms of conduct disorder.
